Caregiver Program

The UofL Trager Institute recognizes that caregivers are critical to creating strong support systems for older adults. We offer programs to ensure caregiver needs are addressed as part of a holistic approach to improving the lives of older adults. All of our programs provide a space for caregivers of older adults to build supportive relationships with other caregivers and learn about caregiving resources in our community.

Our Caregiver Programs & Resources available to the following counties:
Bullitt, Shelby, Oldham, Henry, Trimble, Spencer, and Jefferson

This program provides caregivers the following services:

  • Case Management: supports those caring for loved ones in reaching goals set to assist in navigating the system of care.
  • Support Groups: professionally facilitated, topic-focused content, and with topics rotating based upon the interests and needs of the group members.
  • Trainings: community trainings developed based on caregiver’s area of needs identified.
  • Counseling Services: for individuals caring for their loved ones who need behavioral health counseling.

"One of the most important lessons I've learned being a 24/7 caregiver is there is always too much to do, my care receiver's needs are continuous, and I must find and prioritize time for myself to do the things that are important to me and make it possible to continue on. The caregiver support group is one of those things; talking with and listening to the other caregivers and the therapists makes me feel less alone, allows me to vent when things are really difficult, gives me ideas of how to make things easier, and almost always includes a shared laugh that otherwise can get few and far between. And I always have the choice of talking or just listening, without any pressure either way. While I'm not a fan of zoom and can't wait until we can meet in person, I have to say it's very convenient not having to get my husband cared for, get myself ready, and get to a meeting place. The recently added Wednesday evening option also provides two different days and times to choose from. I try my best not to miss the weekly meeting but when I just can't make it work I know they'll be there next week."
